The Marty Morrissey Show

The Marty Morrissey Show, Thursday January 29th 2015

On The Marty Morrissey Show today...

A new era dawns for Irish theatre as Marty makes his stage debut in Moll, and we have live music from Sean Og Boylan, son of the legendary Meath football manager...

Sean Boylans, Snr & Jnr

It's our pleasure to welcome a legend into studio - a man who managed Meath's footballers for 23 years, and who won no less than four All- Irelands in that time. He was the first, and only ever, man to be conferred as Freeman of the County of Meath.

Vincent Lynch, Marty Morrissey, Seán Boylan & Sean Boylan

But it is not just amongst GAA circles Sean Boylan is highly regarded, he is also a noted herbalist. It's also our pleasure to welcome his youngest son, Seán Og, who is making waves in the music industry, for a chat and a tune, accompanied on keyboards by Vincent Lynch.

Marty In Moll

Well, there's no business like show business and last night on the stage of the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, Marty got to make his theatrical debut in John B Keane's play Moll. He had great support there with 100 listeners from programme in the audience.

You'll be relieved to hear the success of the show did not rest on his portrayal of Ulick, as a stellar cast played all the leading roles. As he rehearsed his one and only line over and over again, he got great support from Gerry Lundberg, Frank Kelly, Des Keogh, Mary McVoy, Clare Barrett and especially Donagh Deeney, who will play Ulick for the rest of the run...

Marty has now officially retired from the stage, but Moll runs in the Gaiety Theatre until February 14th 2015. For more information, click here.

Niamh Briggs Named New Irish Rugby Captain

Niamh Briggs Named New Irish Rugby Captain

The Irish women's rugby team were catapulted into our consciousness last year, when they beat the All Blacks and earned themselves a place in the World Cup semi-final.  Niamh Briggs earned herself a nomination for the 'women's rugby world player of the year' after a prolific Six Nations and successful run in the World Cup. Earlier this week she was named Ireland's new women's rugby captain, and she joins us on the line this afternoon!

Come Party With Marty!

Come Party With Marty!

As the very last week of our show gets underway, there's something we really want to do and that's to ask you, every single person who’s listening out there, "what are you up to next Friday afternoon?"

Whoever you are and wherever you are, we would absolutely love you to come and join us here on The Marty Morrissey Show, in the Radio Centre in Donnybrook in Dublin. We'll be celebrating our very last show, so let's go out with a bang and have our very own 'Marty Party' and we're promising you an afternoon full of fun, music, chat and lots of well-known guests from the world of entertainment and beyond.

And of course there would never be a 'Marty Party' without the man who came up with whole idea in the first place, and that's one of our country's leading satirists and impressionists, the truly fantastic Oliver Callan, who's just performed his sell out show at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre to great acclaim - and Oliver has promised that he will be here too!  The Kilfenora Céilí Band will be getting the party going, and Marty and Brenda will be getting out there step dancing too.  We'd love you to join us!  Brenda will be bringing along a very special guest to the Marty Party: country music star Nathan Carter! The X Factor's Melanie McCabe will be giving an exclusive live performance at the party. And we’ll be announcing more fabulous music and brilliant guests as the week goes on.

You are all warmly invited to the 'Marty Party' here on the show tomorrow Friday, January 30th, and you're very welcome to come on your own or bring your friends and family along too. If you're free, and would like to come along, e-mail the show at morrissey@rte.ie or text us on 51551 (from 3pm - 4.30pm), and we'll get back in touch with you with all the details!
