On The Marty Morrissey Show today...

Rihanna wins a case against Top Shop. But attempts to trademark the phrase "Je Suis Charlie" are rejected. So we ask "what can and can't you trademark?" Can Marty Morrissey trademark his name and iconic image? We catch up with singer and actress Maura O'Connell, who is briefly home from Nashville. And Marty is entertained by a rejuvenated comic legend, Brendan Grace!

Come Party With Marty!

Come Party With Marty!

As the very last week of our show gets underway, there's something we really want to do and that's to ask you, every single person who’s listening out there, "what are you up to next Friday afternoon?"

Whoever you are and wherever you are, we would absolutely love you to come and join us here on The Marty Morrissey Show, in the Radio Centre in Donnybrook in Dublin. We'll be celebrating our very last show, so let's go out with a bang and have our very own 'Marty Party' and we're promising you an afternoon full of fun, music, chat and lots of well-known guests from the world of entertainment and beyond.

And of course there would never be a 'Marty Party' without the man who came up with whole idea in the first place, and that's one of our country's leading satirists and impressionists, the truly fantastic Oliver Callan, who's just performed his sell out show at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre to great acclaim - and Oliver has promised that he will be here too!  The Kilfenora Céilí Band will be getting the party going, and Marty and Brenda will be getting out there step dancing too.  We'd love you to join us!  Brenda will be bringing along a very special guest to the Marty Party: country music star Nathan Carter! And we’ll be announcing more fabulous music and brilliant guests as the week goes on.

You are all warmly invited to the 'Marty Party' here on the show this Friday, January 30th, and you're very welcome to come on your own or bring your friends and family along too. If you're free, and would like to come along, e-mail the show at morrissey@rte.ie or text us on 51551 (from 3pm - 4.30pm), and we'll get back in touch with you with all the details!

Brendan Grace

Brendan Grace

Brendan Grace is famous for his comedy schoolboy character "Bottler", the role of Murphy in the movie Moondance, and his appearance as Father Fintan Stack in Father Ted.

Brendan has shared stages with many well-known names, including Frank Sinatra, who called him his "man in Europe", John Denver, and many others.  It's our pleasure to welcome Brendan into studio this afternoon...

Maura O'Connell & Mike Hanrahan

It's a pleasure to welcome two of the country's most outstanding musicians to studio this afternoon. Mike Hanrahan and Maura O'Connell got their start in the lively folk scene in the 1970s and for a time performed together in a duo called Tumbleweed.

Later Mike’s band Stockton's Wing became a household name in Ireland and beyond. Maura went on to sing with De Danainn, was part of the enormously successful project that was A Woman's Heart, and is an leading exponent of a a capella singing... We're delighted that both join us on the programme this afternoon...

Copyright & Trademarks

That's Rihanna, of course, with Umbrella. Poor old Rihanna was in court recently, against the fashion chain Top Shop, who used her image on a T-shirt - without her permission! And if you're a fan of Rihanna, you'll be pleased to know that she won her case!

And at the same time, the principality of Monaco went to court, trying to claim rights over the actual word, "Monaco".  But they failed... Another legal failure happened in the last few weeks as well. Seemingly, a bunch of people tried to trademark the phrase, "Je Suis Charlie".

Did you know that Calvin Klein is in the process of developing a line of active underwear under the "Marty Morrissey" brand, featuring a mugshot of our dear presenter?! And to protect his good name, and control the way his handsome face is exploited commercially, he has engaged top copyright lawyer, Jeanne Kelly, from law firm Mason, Hayes and Curran, who joins us in studio this afternoon!
