THE GROWTH OF IRISH CRAFT BEER

THE GROWTH OF IRISH CRAFT BEER

Craft beers have been up until fairly recently the preserve of Beer Geeks and Real Ale Bores but they are arriving in a big way in Irish pubs and, increasingly, high end on-trend restaurants.

If Ireland follows what has happened in the States it could become a multi million euro industry. Craft beer in the US commands 6% of the market. The market share here is perhaps as small as 1% but it is growing rapidly. Bord Bia says it rose by 42.5% last year and predicts 35% growth this year. In 2005, Brian Cowen halved the excise paid by microbreweries, allowing them to retain more of their capital and re-invest in their business.

Joe O’Shea journalist , Seamus O’Hara from the Carlow Brewing Company and Ronan Brennan Galway Hooker co-founder join Marian to chat about Craft Beer.

The Irish Craft Beer Festival returns to RDS Dublin from 7-9th September 2012. A celebration of Irish craft brewing, live music and fabulous Irish artisan food stalls.

Featuring over 20 Irish craft breweries, craft cider producers and two International guest breweries the festival is expected to attract over 5,000 attendees throughout the weekend. This year, the team is looking forward to showcasing niche brands, new products, as well as providing craft-beer lovers with a unique insight to the Irish craft brewing scene and the opportunity to meet the brewers and taste over 70 different beers and ciders.

For the first time, the festival will launch with a one-of-a-kind beer and food pairing evening on the 6th September, offering guests the opportunity to learn more about the different attributes and traits of Irish Craft Beers as well as providing a deeper understanding on which foods compliment different types of craft beers.

Saturday, September 8th – noon till .30am
Sunday, September 9th – noon till 10pm
