..
This is the story of engagement in Granagh, County Limerick, which took place a century ago on the 10th of May 1921. It involves a suspected spy sentenced to death by the local IRA. The ambush happened at Woodcock Hill in Granagh, when a British patrol came across an IRA execution party, which was moving a hostage known by the name of Ryan.
Kay Sheehy reports on this engagement. We hear from local men Tommy O'Riordan and Jimmy Chalk, and local genealogist / historian Padraig Hogan.
..
Over the past year or so it's been pretty much impossible for couples to throw the kind of huge wedding bash that we used to take for granted – with every cousin, friend, and associate present and accounted for.
A century ago, during the War of Independence, one prominent Tipperary republican and his fiancée faced quite a few challenges in planning their wedding – and they had to take some extraordinary measures to make sure the big day could go ahead. A country in lockdown due to the ongoing conflict didn't stop the Dan Breen and Brigid Malone throwing the biggest wedding bash of the summer.
Our reporter Conor Sweetman has the story. He talks to local historian Sean Hogan.
