Margaret Browne's Fruit Soda Cake

Fruit Soda Cake


  • 450g plain flour
  • level teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 teaspoons caster sugar
  • 75g sultanas
  • 400mls buttermilk
  • If making it for little Women's Christmas put in 3 grains of rice as well
  • 900g loaf tin (greased)
  • Preheat oven 190c/375F/Gas mark 5
  • Mix all the dry ingredients together
  • Make a well in centre slowly add in the milk mixing all the time to form a dough
  • Knead lightly
  • Put into tin
  • Bake for about 35/40 minutes
  • It should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom
  • Serve with butter and home made jam
