The Christmas House

Well for many, the Hallowe'en decorations are only coming down now and yet all around the country, there have been a substantial number of sightings of ... Christmas Trees! Itís still seven weeks away, but people are putting up their trees earlier and earlier each year. On Saturday, Brenda went to visit one woman whose passion for all things Christmassy is NEARLY intoxicating! Sheila Kinsella lives in Walshestown, Co Kildare; she's married to Joe, and they have two teenage children, Kayleigh and Connor. And although it is only just November, when Brenda met Sheila at the weekend, Sheila was dressed in a snowman jumper...

So we were wondering: is Sheila alone in this? Do you have your tree up yet? How early would you go? Have you sent - or received - any Christmas cards so far? When do you normally start to send the Christmas cards, or start the Christmas shopping? Blue Nun Is Back!

On Today With Pat Kenny last week, Irish historian Diarmaid Ferriter was on talking about some of the icons of the Seventies, from politics and culture to food and wine. At that stage, Ireland’s wine culture was in its infancy, but of course one particular tipple came up in discussion. So exactly does Blue Nun fit into the fine wines of the world? In its heyday in the eighties, the wine was selling two million cases worldwide every year. Nowadays, it sells about 30,000 bottles a year in Ireland, so it turns out, that for all the derision, it’s holding it’s own.

Our producer Fergus Sweeney heads out and about to find out what Ireland's current crop of wine drinkers make of the tipple, and David Whelehan from Whelehan’s Wines is an expert in this field. He joins Derek in studio to chat about how big Blue Nun was in its day...
