VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH
Vlad takes a walk through the history books this morning, in the fields of exploration, science, and politics. Beginning with a spirit of adventure we follow early Ming dynasty explorers in their attempts to circumnavigate the globe: a perfect inspiration for exploring the early music of Asia and Europe at the start of the 15th century. The scientific achievements of early astronomers are also fodder for the imagination of composers throughout history, and Vlad peers through the telescope of time to bring that music to this Sunday morning. And we cap off this week's journey by marking Bastille Day, with music from the time of the French Revolution in 1789, when events were set in motion that led to the storming of the infamous prison-fortress.

THE FULL SCORE WITH LIZ NOLAN
Our first concert of the week comes from the National String Quartet Foundation. The ConTempo Quartet begin with two Irish string quartets, Ina Boyle's lovely E minor Quartet, written in Enniskerry in 1934, and a new piece by Galway's Jane O'Leary. Brahms' sunny, uplifting B flat major quartet was written in 1875 while he enjoyed a summer holiday in the beautiful German town of Ziegelhausen and it was to become his favourite of his three published quartets. Liz Nolan presents a showcase of unabridged musical masterworks, featuring live recordings of Irish and international performers, plus selections from the latest CD releases.
