OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT

The Metropolitan Opera New York presents Poulenc Dialogues des Carmelites

Poulenc's devastating tragedy returns, with soprano Ailyn Pérez as the young woman at the centre of the harrowing, quasi-historical tale of an order of Carmelite nuns martyred in Paris during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror. The remarkable cast also features soprano Sabine Devieilhe in her Met debut as Blanche's fellow novice Constance, soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek as the unshakeable Madame Lidoine, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as Mère Marie, and mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in her role debut as Madame de Croissy. Maestro Bertrand de Billy conducts John Dexter's striking and timeless staging.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH

The list of unofficial Bachs grows with yet one more name for the Vox Nostra playlist: Elias Ammerbach, who died on this day in 1597. Although perhaps not as well known as Johann Sebastian, CPE Bach (or PDQ - or even my good friend Offenbach!), his music is part of the history of organ music. His 1583 volume, the 'Book of Organ Tablature', is filled with polyphonic arrangements of music popular in his time—including Senfl, Isaac, des Prez, Clemens non Papa, and Lassus—from sacred to secular. We'll get to explore Ammerbach's organ tablature, the vocal works that inspired it, and the legacy of keyboard music that followed, all on a morning's Vox Nostra.

He includes highlights from his recent interviews on RTÉ Radio 1's Arena, pays tribute to the great romantic composer Frederik Delius and presents curious connections between the music of J.S Bach and Swedish folk music. Séan plays classical music, which inspires direction towards folk and contemporary; but as always, the prevailing connections lie within the notes.
