MOVIES AND MUSICALS WITH AEDÍN GORMLEY

As the final midnight of the year approaches, Aedín focuses on the fairytale character who was warned to make it home by midnight, Cinderella. We'll hear songs from three different screen versions, the original animated 1950 feature, the 1976 musical The Slipper and The Rose and Kenneth Branagh's 2015 telling of the tale starring Lily James. We'll salute Anthony Hopkins who celebrates his 85th birthday today with music from The Remains of the Day, Hannibal and Shadowlands.

Irish National Opera presents Puccini's Tosca

Sinead Campbell-Wallace stars in Irish National Opera's thrilling production with tenor Dmitri Pittas as the painter-revolutionary Cavaradossi and bass-baritone Tómas Tómasson as the vile police chief Scarpia. Nil Vendetti conducts the Irish National Opera Orchestra and Chorus.

Bernstein meets Beethoven in our concert today by the Zurich Chamber Orchestra with Daniel Hope directing from the violin. Various masterpieces are presented in a new guise, namely in arrangements for violin and string orchestra, including the West Side Story Suite, arranged by Paul Bateman, the cavatina from Beethoven's String Quartet No. 13 in a transcription for strings, and the sublime Adagietto from Mahler's Symphony No. 5 in a more intimate version for chamber orchestra. Liz Nolan presents a showcase of unabridged musical masterworks, featuring live recordings of Irish and international performers, plus selections from the latest CD releases.
