Puccini's Madama Butterfly starring Angela Gheorghiu and Jonas Kaufmann

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Angela Gheorghiu's operatic debut in Covent Garden. In this first part of a 2-part celebration of the life and output of Gheorghiu, Jon Tolansky sits down with the soprano to chat about her last three decades in music.

Plus, Paul brings us a recording of Gheorghiu in her debut performance of Madama Butterfly in the role of Cio-Cio-San partnered by the exciting German tenor Jonas Kaufmann as her lover Pinkerton, who also made his debut in this role. Suzuki is sung by Enkelejda Shkosa, Sharpless by Fabio Capitanucci and Goro by Gregory Bonfatti. Antonio Pappano conducts the Orchestra e Coro dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The recording took place in the Santa Cecilia Hall of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome in July 2008, the year commemorating the 150th anniversary of Puccini's birth.
