OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT

Wexford Festival Opera 2021 Le Songe d'une Nuit d'Été by Ambroise Thomas

Paul Herriott looks back at one of the highlights from Wexford Festival Opera 2021 this evening with a production of Ambroise Thomas' Le Songe d'une Nuit d'Été. Surprisingly, the plot of this opera has nothing to do with Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream; it is a fantasy about Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth I! Guillaume Tourniaire conducts the Wexford Festival Opera Orchestra and Chorus with a cast including Hasmik Torosyan, Valentina Mastrangelo, Sébastien Guèze, Tommaso Barea, Vasyl Solodkyy, Rory Dunne and Kathleen Norchi.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH

Reach for the stars: Constantijn Huygens was born on this day in 1596, and although his son Christiaan's name has gone on to be remembered for more astronomical discoveries, Huygens père was just as interesting a polymath. A poet and composer, and secretary to not one but two princes of Orange, he wrote in multiple languages and also played the lute and the then new-fangled instrument, the guitar. On today's Vox Nostra, we'll hear selections from his sacred and secular compositions, including airs de cour in French, as well as madrigals in Italian and Psalms in Latin. Organist Francesco Landini's contribution to late medieval music is also part of the exploration this Sunday morning, which will also bring into our orbit the music of Renaissance Spain and Italy, as well as Baroque French and English instrumental delights.
