DAYBREAK WITH EVONNE FERGUSON

As we journey towards Lá Fhéile Pádraig, Evonne introduces legendary heroes Cáilte and Oisín as they tell their ancient stories to a newly arrived St. Patrick with excerpts from Tarik O'Regan's captivating choral work, Acallam na Senórach (An Irish Colloquy). At 9.20 we take a celebratory journey to the lesser-known realms of nature on our island in Nature File with ecologist, Anja Murray.

Nature File Episode 2 - Mallard

Mallard is our most familiar duck, males have iridescent green heads, and females are patterned in mottled brown, though it's often their rear ends we see poking up from lake or canal. It is now that mallards are laying their eggs, leading to clusters of adorably fluffy chicks by April.

THE LYRIC FEATURE

In December 1913, the ballad 'Danny Boy' written by English lyricist Frederic E Weatherly was published in New York City and in the century that followed, was to become one of the most recorded songs of all time. It is well loved here but in America it became an anthem for an entire immigrant community and attracted countless recording artists to its poignant story of loss, love and faithfulness. In this documentary, Mary Brophy travels to the heartland of Irish-America, to tell the story of the song in one city, and attempt to uncover how it rose to such heights.

An IWR production for RTÉ lyric fm made with the support of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.
