OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT

Handel's Acis and Galatea with the Irish Baroque Orchestra

Acis and Galatea was the first of Handel's works presented to Dublin audiences, receiving its first outing in the city in 1734. In Handel's time this would have been even more popular among Dublin concert-goers than his 'Messiah', strange as it is for us to think of it today. The story features the love between the title characters destroyed by the jealous Polyphemus, mirrored by music that takes turns at being joyful and melancholic. In tonight's performance Julia Doyle and Dean Power sing the title roles, with Edward Grint as a devious and envious Polyphemus.

Recorded in St Patrick's Hall, Dublin Castle 20th August 2021

THE LYRIC FEATURE

Musica Arcana: The Secret Life of Allegri's Miserere

In Easter 1770 a 14-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his father Leopold attended Holy Week services at the Sistine chapel in the Vatican. There he heard a setting of Psalm 51, Miserere Mei by Gregorio Allegri which was considered so precious by the Vatican that it forbade the making of copies and threatened any publication or attempted copy with excommunication. Mozart heard it twice and transcribed it faithfully from memory, thus creating the first known unauthorised copy, now lost. To this day musicians try to reconstruct what Mozart heard. But how different is Allegri's original from these versions and what has happened over the years to transform the work. Brian McIvor travels to Rome with author Fr.Michael Collins and unravels the mystery with the help of conductor Roy Goodman, singer and scholar Sally Dunkely, of the Sixteen and broadcaster Tim Thurston.

11am - The Universal Mass with the African Gospel Choir

A new sung mass composed by J.J. O'Shea who has invited various groups to perform it and give their own interpretation drawing on their tradition, idiom and culture. RTÉ lyric fm has commissioned four different interpretations which are funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland's music performance fund which was made available during 2020 at a time when venues were closed and performance opportunities for musicians and ensembles were extremely limited. The first two will be premiered on Niall Carroll's Classical Daytime this Christmas with the remaining two receiving their first broadcast during Easter 2022.

We begin with the African Gospel Choir who are a 15 strong group of singers originally from Nigeria and now based in Ireland and led by Tomilola Allen-Taylor. The parts of the Mass (The Alleluia, Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei and Gloria Patri) have been translated into the Yoruba language. The African Gospel Choir aims to showcase and help develop the talents of young African singers in Ireland.
