THE LYRIC FEATURE

Following the Inny

'Following the Inny' paints a vivid picture of the rich diversity of life along the River Inny, and the surrounding Inny Valley, in South Kerry. Producer J.J. O`Shea journeys along the river from its sources in small tinkling streams in the remote uplands of the Iveragh Peninsula down to where it meets the wide Atlantic Ocean close to Waterville.J.J. travels in the company of botanist Therese Higgins and archaeologist Aoibheann Lambe as they explore the changing landscape, flora and fauna of the highland, lowland and coastal regions and examine some of the significant archaeological sites along the way including dramatic examples of pre-historic rock art and standing stones, a cillin and the ruins of a medieval church. In addition, local folklorist Maire Murphy considers some of the evocative place names given to various pools in the river, and she explains the local system of night-time poaching that was employed in former times when the lands formed part of the Lansdowne Estate. The 'River Theme' that weaves as a thread throughout was composed especially for the programme and played by Marc Eagleton on acoustic guitar and Reidun Schlesinger on harp.

Presented and produced by JJ O'Shea
