RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra 2011-2012 Season
2011 Mentoring Scheme for Advanced Young Musicians
One of the orchestra's new developments in 2010-2O11 was the Mentoring Scheme for Advanced Young Musicians, designed to provide third-level instrumental students with the opportunity to audition, rehearse and perform with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and with conductors and soloists of international stature.
THE RTÉ NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA HAD A GREAT WEEK IN NOVEMBER 2011 WITH THE 2011 MENTORING SCHEME PARTICIPANTS. Eight of Ireland's leading young instrumental students, ranging in age from 19 to 23 and at stages from first year through to final year degree and recent graduates, made it through the audition process.
From counties Cork, Dublin, Galway and Kilkenny, they were students of violin, viola, clarinet, trombone and percussion at either the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, the Royal Irish Academy of Music or the CIT Cork School of Music. All performed with the orchestra in 'Russian Colours' on Friday 4 November and, with conductor Matthias Bamert, all took part in Soundings, the free pre-concert talk.
'The mentoring scheme marked my first time to rehearse and perform with a professional orchestra. Thanks for such a great week. It was an amazing experience!'
Rónán Scarlett, percussion, Clonsilla, Dublin
'Preparing for the audition gave me the opportunity to improve on my audition skills and was a very positive experience.'
Mary Morgan, trombone, Glenamaddy, Co. Galway
'The RTÉ NSO's Mentoring Scheme is one of the most important outreach initiatives developed by the orchestra. The opportunity for our students to rehearse and perform with seasoned professionals in a supported environment creates a meaningful transition between education and real life.'
Royal Irish Academy of Music Director
