The PSNI has raided 27 brothels across Northern Ireland in a major operation against human trafficking.

Up to 150 police officers took part in the operation, which saw a man and a woman arrested.

Many of the women helped today were originally from Brazil.

They were being exploited in brothels in towns like Armagh, Dungannon, Omagh, Cookstown, Derry, Coleraine, Ballymena, Portrush and Belfast.

Officers said they believed the women's immigration status and lack of English had made them vulnerable.

Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Hill said the operation had targeted an organised crime gang trafficking women and transgender individuals into and around Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

An Garda Síochána assisted with today's operation.
