Letterkenny University Hospital in Co Donegal has said patients are currently experiencing long waiting times to be admitted from its Emergency Department.
LUH says it is "extremely busy today with a high number of people attending" the hospital and it says there is "ongoing pressure on bed availability".
The hospital has apologised to patients for the long wait times and said people will be treated "strictly in order of medical priority".
In a statement, it said "given the volume of patients attending the Emergency Department, the hospital is asking the public to contact their GP during normal surgery hours or the NoWDOC GP Out of Hours service in the first instance if their health problem is not urgent".
And as part of the hospital's Covid-19 prevention measures, it is asking patients attending LUH to "wait in the ED alone to help maintain social distancing" and it said "a companion will only be permitted in exceptional circumstances" in order to minimise the risk of infection.
