Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh has been lit in red tonight to honour Christians and others persecuted for their religious beliefs.

Many cathedrals, churches and other buildings are lit annually at the end of November to mark Red Wednesday.

The global campaign highlights the unjust detention of prisoners of conscience; people who are in detention without charge; those who have experienced unfair trial without proper defence, inadequate and degrading prison conditions; torture and beatings and pressure to convert.

This evening, the Archbishop of Armagh Eamon Martin said the threat of unjust imprisonment of this kind is one of the most prevalent and frightening forms of intimidation and persecution of Christians throughout the world.

He also drew attention to other religious minorities throughout the world who suffer persecution.
