An investigation is under way into the attempted theft of a digger near an ATM in Ballybay, Co Monaghan.

Gardaí on patrol, including members of the Regional Support Unit, came across the incident at the rear of a premises in the Cornamuckglass area at around 2.30am.

A number of males fled the scene and were pursued by gardaí until they crossed the border.

No arrests have been made.

A Silver Ford Mondeo, which gardaí believe was used in the incident, was found at an industrial estate in Carrickmacross and has been seized for a technical examination.

An ATM was ripped from the branch of the Bank of Ireland in Ballybay just over a year ago.
