A murder investigation is under way following the death of a 30-year-old man in Northern Ireland.

The man died in the Parkmount Street area of north Belfast at around 9pm last night.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested.

It is understood that the victim and the arrested man are both from the local area.

Police have not yet established a motive for the killing and are appealing to the public for information.

DUP councillor Brian Kingston described the area as very settled and quiet.

"It's a very sad scene this morning, a man has died after apparently sustaining injuries," he said.

"People seem to know very little about it, many residents are just hearing about it this morning.

"I understand the victim was treated by paramedics at the scene but later died in hospital."
