General Election 2016 (#GE16) was the top trending domestic news story on Twitter in Ireland during the past year, according to new data released by the company.

Other Irish stories which dominated conversations on the microblogging platform included the debate around #Repealthe8th and also the 1916 commemorations, through the hashtag #Ireland2016.

In terms of international news, the #Brexit bombshell was the most talked about event among Irish based Twitter users.

But the election of Donald #Trump also captured much attention on the social network, coming in second place.

The attacks in #Brussels, Nice (#PrayForNice) and #Orlando also featured in the top ten trending international news stories discussed by Irish based users on Twitter in 2016.

The #GE16 #leadersdebate on RTE was the top trending TV programme, while Donald #Trump was the most mentioned person here.

#COYBIG and #Euro2016 were the top two trending sports related hashtags, reflecting the interest in the European Championships in France during the summer.

Ireland's win over the All Blacks at Soldier Field also made the top ten sporting moments, through the hashtag #IRLvNZL.

Globally, #RIO2016, #Election2016 and #PokemonGo were the most popular topics on the microblogging site.
