Officials in the US state of Arkansas are on the lookout for an escaped inmate after he made a daring break from Garland County Detention Centre.

Derrick Estell escaped from the centre at 1.40pm on Sunday afternoon in what has been described as an elaborate plan.

Garland County officials said they are still searching for the 34-year-old.

They said dozens of citizens have called with tips and they are now working on those leads.

"Evidently there were several other individuals involved," said Deputy Scott Hinohosa with the Garland County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities took a 58-year-old into custody Sunday for allegedly assisting in the escape and the getaway vehicle was recovered minutes later.

Officials with the Garland County Sheriff's office say more arrests are expected.
