About the Piece
Tara Lyons’s love affair with Canada began when the man who is now her husband dropped to his knees and asked for her hand at Niagara Falls in 2007.
After chatting with members of the Irish community in Toronto, Tara, who is from Galway, realised the potential in bringing her web business to Canada and starting up afresh.
Today, the business, located in the historic Distillery District where many Irish laboured and toiled, is thriving — and Tara is starting the process of becoming a permanent resident.
About the Director
Lauren Crothers is a Hong Kong-born Irish/Australian journalist working for a Canadian newspaper in Toronto.
She says it was wonderful to be able to interview the subject of this piece in the Distillery District, an area soaked in Irish history.
Working on this story, she says, gave her a wonderful opportunity not only to look back at Ireland's role in making Toronto what it is today, but also to appreciate what Irish newcomers are bringing to the city.
She insists she has never rooted her identity in any one place, but the people she meets in Toronto are always quick to remind her of how lucky she is to be Irish.
She thinks they may have a point...
Lauren is also a keen photographer and her work can be seen at: www.flickr.com/photos/lollyburn
