Former Director General of RTÉ Oliver Maloney has died at the age of 77.

Mr Maloney served as DG from 1975 to 1978, having previously served as Secretary to the RTÉ Authority, Director of Personnel, and Assistant Director General.

He retired from RTÉ in 1978 at the age of 41.

Current Director General of the organisation Noel Curran today paid tribute to Mr Maloney.

He said: "It is perhaps for his reform agenda at RTÉ that Oliver Maloney will be most remembered, and in his years as Director General he paved the way for the launch of RTÉ Two and Radio 2, now RTÉ 2fm.

"It was the beginning of an expansion that now sees RTÉ operate over 20 distinctive services.

"I would like to pay tribute to Oliver Maloney, and express my sincere sympathies to his family, friends and former colleagues."

Mr Maloney is survived by his wife Connie and his three children, whose mother, Kitty, pre-deceased Mr Maloney.

He died in Lisbon, Portugal.
