The death has been announced of the former Bishop of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora Martin Drennan.

He was 78 years old and had retired six years ago due to ill health.

A native of Piltown, Co Kilkenny, he studied at Saint Patrick's College, Maynooth and was ordained to the priesthood in 1968.

He continued his studies in Rome where he was awarded a licentiate in both sacred theology and sacred scripture.

Bishop Drennan was a spiritual director at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome during the 1980s.

In a statement Bishop Michael Duignan said Bishop Drennan would be remembered in prayers and he offered sympathies to his family and to those mourning his loss.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
