The director of the Sexual Violence Centre in Cork and founding member Mary Crilly is to receive the Freedom of Cork - the highest honour the city can bestow.
Lord Mayor Councillor Colm Kelleher told last night's City Council Meeting that she is being granted the honour in recognition of her work in the areas of sexual and domestic violence, sex trafficking, female genital mutilation, and stalking.
Ms Crilly has been supporting victims of sexual violence across Cork City and County for nearly 40 years.
The custom of awarding the "Freedom of the City" dates from the 14th century.
Previous recipients of the award include Dean Swift, US President John F Kennedy, John Hume, President Mary Robinson, former British prime minister John Major, Sonia O'Sullivan, Roy Keane and Ronan O'Gara.
The award ceremony will take place at City Hall on June 9th next at 2pm.
