A man has been arrested following a serious assault in Co Waterford earlier today.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a man aged in his mid-20s was assaulted in the Summerhill area of Tramore.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident shortly after 11am and the man was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Waterford.

He is understood to be in a stable condition.

Gardaí arrested a man aged in his 50s in connection with the assault and he is currently detained for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Tramore Garda Station.

The scene is preserved for forensic examination and local traffic diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and are particularly appealing to those with video footage to make it available to them.
