School and college students are being invited to submit poems for an upcoming conference taking place in Waterford to mark Poetry Day Ireland.

'Soundings' will be the theme of the two-day event on 28 and 29 April, based on the well-known English textbook of the same name, which was studied by generations of Leaving Cert candidates.

Organisers of the conference hope to encourage participation and engagement in culture. Ten poets from across the country will be reading their favourite poems from the textbook, as well as their own work.

There will also be writing workshop led by poets Mary Madec and Conall O'Cúinn.

The event is a collaboration between Waterford Institute of Technology, Christ Church Cathedral in Waterford and the Modwords Waterford Creativity Festival.

Local primary school and secondary school pupils, as well as third-level students, are encouraged to take part by submitting their own poem on the theme ‘Written in the Stars’, in line with the Poetry Ireland theme for this year's Poetry Day Ireland which takes place on 28 April.
