Grants of up to €1,300 have been awarded to 15 schools across Co Cork to provide contactless water refill stations.

It brings to 31, primary and secondary schools who have won a Cork County Council competition for funding, first launched in 2020.

The aim of the initiative is to reduce waste and will see thousands of single use plastic bottles removed from the schools every week.

Cork County Council CEO Tim Lucey said the initiative "is making a real difference to the amount of waste being produced".

One of the schools involved in the scheme is Scoil Chaitigheirn in Eyeries, which no longer receives single use plastic bottles of water as part of its School Meals Programme.

The provision of a water refill station in the school has eliminated more than 400 single use plastic bottles which had been discarded in the school every week.
