Two men have been arrested following the seizure of a loaded revolver in the Tallaght area of Dublin yesterday.
The two men, aged 51 and 22, are currently being held in separate garda stations in the capital.
The garda special tactics unit, as well as members from the special crime task force and the drugs and organised crime bureau took part in the operation, during which a vehicle with false number plates was also seized.
Gardaí have said that follow-up searches after the seizure are ongoing.
Assistant Commissioner John O'Driscoll said the seizure meant that gardaí had intervened in a threat to life situation "that was likely to result in the death of at least one person".
"The members of the Garda Síochána involved are to be commended for bringing this operation to a successful conclusion by seizing a loaded firearm and arresting suspects," he added.
