A woman in her 70s was found dead following a fire in the Silversprings Court area of Cork city last night.

The alarm was raised by the woman's neighbours just before 8pm last night. Gardaí, the ambulance service and two units of Cork City Fire Service attended the scene.

Fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and quickly brought the fire under control.

The woman's body was found inside the house. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

She lived alone and was the only occupant of the house at the time.

The woman's body was taken to Cork University Hospital, where a post mortem examination will be conducted.

The house was sealed off by gardaí and a technical examination is taking place there this morning.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by gardaí from Mayfield garda station.

The coroner for Cork City has been informed.

The garda file is likely to be submitted at an inquest to take place once the investigation is completed.
