A member of Galway's Traveller community has been honoured by the city’s mayor at a socially distanced function this afternoon.
Owen Ward has been an advocate for education since he completed an Access Programme at NUI Galway and undertook BA and Masters courses there.
Mr Ward is now employed as a co-ordinator on the programme that introduced him to the third level system.
He works to encourage greater participation in higher education by students from diverse or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
After he graduated, he became the first Traveller to be elected to the University’s governing authority.
The Mayoral Reception at Leisureland in Salthill was organised to recognise Mr Ward’s contribution to the life of the city.
