A 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an investigation into property registration fraud.

The man was arrested by gardaí attached to the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau in the Dundalk area earlier today.

He is currently being held at Dundalk Garda Station, where he can be held for up to seven days.

It is the ninth arrest as part of the investigation, which involves a fraud of up to €20 million.

The fraud involves the use of fraudulent documentation to remove mortgage charges held by financial institutions on properties, in turn allowing the sale of those properties without repaying the mortgages.

Gardaí have said that in this case, mortgage charges were removed from 12 properties, with six of the properties being sold.
