Revenue officers seized over 102,000 cigarettes, worth €69,000, during a search operation at Rosslare Europort.

The discovery happened on Saturday afternoon when officers selected a Hungarian-registered vehicle for examination, after the vehicle disembarked a ferry from France.

A search which was carried out with a mobile x-ray scanner found the cigarettes hidden within the floor of the vehicle.

They were branded Marlboro Red and Compliment and, according to a Revenue spokesman, represent a potential loss of €54,327 to the Exchequer.

Two Romanian men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were questioned following the search.

According to Revenue, the investigation into the seizure is continuing.

The search took place as a result of routine profiling as part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the 'shadow economy' and the sale of illegal tobacco products.
