The Government has approved a supplementary estimate of €1 billion for the Department of Children and Integration.
The money is required to meet the cost of accommodating people fleeing the war in Ukraine and those seeking international protection.
The money will be from funds set aside in the last Budget and it will not impact spending in any other department.
The number of people from Ukraine in State-provided accommodation is now more than 70,000 and it is increasing by around 550 people each week.
The number of people in international protection accommodation has risen from 8,600 in January 2022 to 23,200 today.
Minister for Integration Roderic O'Gorman said there is a shortfall in accommodation, and it is likely that tents will continue to be used to meet this challenge.
