Russian ambassador to Ireland Yury Filatov has not been invited to attend the Oireachtas this Thursday, when US President Joe Biden delivers his address to members of both the Dáil and Seanad.

An embassy spokesperson told RTÉ News: "The Embassy did not receive any invitations to the events that are going to take place during the US President's visit to Ireland".

A spokesperson for the Oireachtas said that not all members of the diplomatic corp had been invited due to the large size of the visiting US delegation.

As well as TDs and Senators, the usual custom is for Irish MEPs as well as MLAs from Northern Ireland to be invited, along with ambassadors.

Last year, Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl invited all of the diplomatic representations based in Ireland to the Oireachtas, when the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was addressing a joint sitting.

On that occasion, ambassador Filatov chose not to attend.
