Thousands of voters may find they are not on the voting register if the election takes place before 14 February, according to the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee.

Sean Fleming wants the Dáil to pass a measure this week to ensure all these voters are on the register in time for an election.

The problem arises from the fact that a new register for 2020 will not become valid until 15 February.

But there are thousands of people whose names have been added to this register which currently has only draft status.

Mr Fleming believes these people have no idea yet that they will not be able to vote if there is an early election.

He is calling for the Dáil to address the matter before it is dissolved this week.

The Department of Housing and Local Government has strongly urged people to check  if they are registered to vote by contacting their local authority.

If not they can apply to get on the supplementary register no later than 15 days before polling day.
