A local resident captured footage of a cliff collapsing after heavy rains in the Canterbury region of New Zealand.

Ange Protheroe recorded the moment part of the Klondyke Terrace collapsed into the Rangitata river, outside the town of Timaru, on the South Island.

The collapse came shortly after a local state of emergency had been declared.

Timaru District Council said on Facebook that there was indication of further heavy rainfall in alpine catchments for the rest of the weekend.

Residents have been alerted to be ready to evacuate at short notice.
