A bright flare of light, believed to be a meteor, was seen streaking across skies around southern Australia on Tuesday night.

Residents from South Australia to Adelaide shared images and videos of the impressive light phenomenon on social media.

South Australia Police joined in the skywatchers, sharing surveillance footage that captured the supposed meteor descending in a blaze, before the night sky lit up in a spectacular glow in Mount Gambier.

The Astronomical Society Australia told local media that it was a piece of "space dust" about the size of a marble that entered the atmosphere and witnesses saw its greenish hue before it burned up with a dome of orange.
