A jogger running through a field outside of the Dutch city of Utrecht on Sunday found an abandoned lion cub.

The animal is believed to be between four and five months old was found in a small cage dumped in a field.

The cub was taken to the Lion Foundation in the Dutch province of North Holland, after being examined by a vet, local media reported.

The foundation has taken to social media to share updates on the cub’s health, saying that it was "very tired from the hectic events".

The cub is currently under quarantine, but the foundation added that it's drinking water and is already feeding and seems at ease in its new surroundings.

Police have made a public appeal for information on its owner.
