The annual Battle of the Oranges kicked off in the Italian town of Ivrea on Sunday.
During the three-day carnival, participants are divided into two groups: commoners who are on foot, and guards of the medieval lords, who are transported around by carriage.
The two groups pelt each other with oranges.
Participants threw the oranges so fiercely that 180 people were injured during Sunday's event.
One local resident said: "To be honest I'm scared of it, because one of my friends lost sight in one of his eyes two years ago after being hit by oranges."
According to data collected in previous years, the Battle of the Oranges requires as much as 500 tonnes of oranges.
