Two men remain in a critical but stable condition at University Hospital Limerick following a number of stabbing incidents in the Thomondgate area of the city.
One man in his 20s was discovered in a critical condition with stab wounds at a house on New Road at 2.35am this morning.
A second man, who is in his 40s, was found a short time later in a house on the nearby Cross Road estate. He too had sustained stab wounds and was in a critical condition.
Investigating gardaí say the circumstances behind the violent incidents are still being pieced together and they will be hoping to interview both men when they are deemed medically-able.
It is understood, however, that gardaí are not looking for anyone else in connection with the stabbings.
Limerick City & County Labour councillor Conor Sheehan said Thomondgate is a "very close knit community" and people are shocked by what has happened.
"What the community wants now, hopefully, is that this is resolved quickly and that there is nothing more untoward here."
Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.
They are asking anyone who was in the area of New Road and Cross Road between 2am and 3am this morning, including any road users who may have camera footage, to contact them.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
