A garda has been arrested and questioned as part of an investigation into the sending of letters containing allegations against other members of the force.

It is understood the garda was arrested this morning in Cork. He has been suspended from duty.

In a statement, the Garda Press Office said the garda was detained under section four of the Criminal Justice Act, on suspicion of having committed an offence under the 1976 Criminal Law Act.

He was questioned by detectives at a garda station in Co Tipperary before being released without charge.

A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
