A man in his 50s has died after being rescued from the sea near Youghal, Co Cork.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public who spotted the man in difficulty in the water at Calysso Bay, just outside the estuary in Youghal at 4pm.

Youghal RNLI launched its lifeboat and reached the man within 20 minutes. 

Members of the crew administered CPR to the man on board the lifeboat, and this was continued by ambulance paramedics when the lifeboat arrived on shore. 

The man was pronounced dead a short time later.

His body has been removed to Cork University Hospital for a post mortem examination.
