Two men are in custody following a burglary and assault that happened at a house in Co Tipperary early this morning.

The incident took place at 5.30am in the Westgate Court area of Clonmel when two men entered a house and stole some items.

The occupant of the house woke up during the burglary and chased a suspect down the road before being assaulted.

The victim, who is in his 30s, is being treated in South Tipperary General Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

A man in his 20s was arrested when gardaí from Clonmel carried out a patrol of the Irishtown area.

A man in his 30s was later arrested when he was found trying to dump some of the stolen property into a nearby river.

Both suspects are being detained at Clonmel Garda Station.

Officers from the divisional scenes of crime teams have been carrying out examinations of three separate suspected crime scenes in the Irishtown area of Clonmel.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed any of these incidents to contact them.

They are also keen to speak to road users who were in the area between 5.30am and 6.15am, particularly those who may have dashcam footage.
