Two separate investigations are underway by gardai and by the Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission into the discharge of a garda firearm during an incident in Mallow in Co Cork last night.

The incident happened in the Spa area on the outskirts of Mallow on Mitchelstown Road at around 8.30pm.

It is understood that both detectives and members of the Garda's Armed Support Unit were involved, and a garda firearm was discharged as attempts were being made to stop a car.

One man was injured in the incident. His injuries are not thought to be serious.

Two men have been arrested. They are currently being detained under drug trafficking legislation at Mallow Garda Station.

The area where the incident happened has been sealed off and a garda investigation is underway.

As the incident involved the discharge of a garda firearm, it was referred to the Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission for investigation.

GSOC officers attended the scene last night and will conduct their own investigation into the discharge of the firearm.
