Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys is chairing a meeting of enterprise agencies, business interests, members of Clare County Council and both University of Limerick and Limerick IT following the announcement yesterday by Molex that it is to close next year with the loss of 500 jobs.

She said the aim of the meeting is to work on a strategy to try and find alternative employment opportunities for those who lost their jobs and to work with IDA Ireland to find another investor for the extensive Molex building.

Minister Humphreys acknowledged it was a major blow and very disappointing news for the Molex worforce, followed by the news this morning that 320 people employed by Novartis in Co Cork are to lose their jobs.

She said she wanted to ensure both sets of workers that every effort was being made to help them to get whatever upskilling is necessary to secure future employment.
