An investigation is under way after two women, one aged 90, were mugged in Macroom in Cork.

The elderly woman was taken to Cork University Hospital suffering from shock before being released yesterday evening.

The woman and her friend, who was in her 60s, were sitting on a bench in the town's Castle Grounds at around 2.55pm when the incident occurred.

It is believed the women were pulled off the bench when two men pulled a handbag from one of them before running away.

The alarm was raised by a passerby.

Gardaí described the mugging as "a nasty, mean crime on two vulnerable women and one which has caused a lot of upset locally."

The 90-year-old woman was treated for shock and minor injuries.

Gardaí have appealed to any witnesses or anyone with information to contact Macroom Garda Station on 026 -20590.

The two suspects are described as being tall, thin and in their late teens to early 20s.
