Gardaí in Co Cork have completed a technical examination of a house which was extensively damaged in an overnight fire in the village of Belgooly, around 5km from Kinsale.

They say they are keeping an open mind on the cause of the fire, although their investigation will examine if it was started deliberately.

The house, in the Meadows estate, was unoccupied when the fire was discovered and there were no injuries.

The alarm was raised at 10.45pm last night.

Fire brigade units from Kinsale and Carrigaline fought the blaze and remained there until after 3am this morning.

Gardaí have been conducting door-to-door enquiries in the area, and are appealing to witnesses or people with information to contact them in Kinsale or Bandon garda stations.
