The body of a woman found in the Bunratty river in Co Clare this afternoon is believed to be that of a woman who has been missing from Sixmilebridge for five days.

60-year-old Annette Fawl was last seen on Saturday night in the village after she walked home from mass with two neighbours.

A search for her got under way last Tuesday when she failed to turn up for work at a local school where she was a cleaner.

A major search involving gardaí, as well as volunteers from search teams in Clare, Limerick and Tipperary were involved in river, shoreline and land searches for the missing woman.

Drones were also used to search inaccessible areas of land.

The woman's body was located in the Bunratty river about 1km from Sixmilebridge this afternoon.

It has been taken to University Hospital Limerick for formal identification and a post mortem.
